The Gazette is a paper owned by the family of Karen Bass, a Democrat who is seeking to represent the state in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Bass, a first-time candidate, has been endorsed by the New England Political Leadership Alliance, which is the highest fundraising group in the state. The alliance’s executive director, David Daley, is a Clinton fundraiser and consultant who, like the senator, has been indicted for lying to the FBI.
In the past, the Gazette has opposed Karen Bass’ candidacy – with the newspaper having published a letter written anonymously by a union member who said they could not support her because she had a history of advocating for Democrats.
So, the question is, who is she really, exactly? In an article published by the Independent Institute entitled “Karen Bass on the Record,” the newspaper says only that she is “a progressive Democrat.” It also says that she received the endorsement of the Democratic Party of New England and that she is committed to “the progressive cause,” which in the past would have disqualified her from seeking a seat from the New Hampshire House of Representatives.
The Independent Institute wrote: “In a 2011 radio interview, Bass, a Harvard-educated lawyer, said she is ‘progressive’ as opposed to the establishment candidates such as U.S. Rep. John Kerry.” (http://www.independent.org/article/karen-bass-progressive-takes-the-lead-in-house-race-1-1).
But the Independent Institute’s article also quoted Bass saying she “believes in government intervention in areas of health care, education, the economy and other areas where I think we are moving in the wrong direction.”
Is that what they mean by “progressive?”
