Steven Gerrard bows out of Liverpool with a touching homecoming

With good wishes from the stands, Steven Gerrard said goodbye to Liverpool on Monday in style.

The English midfielder returned to his boyhood club Anfield for his first game of the season, playing for Liverpool’s youth team against Everton. In a ceremonial match, Gerrard was presented with a blue and silver plaque to be placed in the Anfield stadium.

He received a passionate reception from Liverpool fans, who cheered and chanted his name as he warmed up before the match.

“It was very emotional, it’s a club that I’ve been a fan of all my life,” Gerrard said. “It was good to have the fans behind me and know that they wanted me back. The reception was very good, which I was thankful for, and it meant a lot, being back at Anfield. It was a good experience for me and a good reminder of what football is all about.

“It was always a dream to come back. It’s been so long since I was here, that a lot of things have happened and a lot of good things have happened. I can’t wait to play again when it’s over.”
