NORRISTOWN, Penn. — A man accused of allegedly brutally attacking Democratic congresswoman Nancy Pelosi with a hammer is in a New Jersey hospital, according to reports.

Authorities say the 55-year-old man, William Calley, allegedly beat his wife with the hammer before attempting to murder her with a knife, then committing suicide before they were both arrested.

Investigators said that after the alleged attack, the couple asked for help. Two police officers responded to their home and spoke to Calley, who requested medical assistance.

The police then contacted the couple on the phone, the report said. They said Calley then agreed to surrender to police.

During the call, the officers said, he asked for Nancy Pelosi. When the officers told him there was no Nancy Pelosi, he asked, “What do you mean, there’s no Nancy Pelosi?” according to a report from New Jersey’s Associated Press.

When he learned the police had no idea who they were speaking to, Calley said, “What do you want me to do, give up and die?”

“I’m not going to go to jail when there’s no Nancy Pelosi,” Calley said, according to the AP. “What do you mean, there’s no Nancy Pelosi?”

According to the AP, Calley said he was “waving a hammer in front of the cops.” He then told the officers what happened and said he had been at “work” the “last couple of days.”

The officers said they did not know what happened while they were speaking to Calley.

Investigators believe Calley and his wife were inebriated, which was confirmed after his arrest by medical personnel.

Calley was charged with multiple counts of murder. During his arraignment Wednesday, Superior Court Judge Joseph R. Jones IV said Calley had been “pretty good throughout this whole thing.”
