Second body found in Ontario wash after storm swept away about 10 people last week
A man’s body was found in a wash while thousands of residents in Ontario were without power Friday after a weeklong storm that left thousands of homes without power had the third most destructive weather event on record.
The body was found Friday morning by a member of the public at the Riverdale Park District in Port Credit, near the village of Caledonia.
Police are expected to release the identity of the victim later Friday.
“We are still trying to establish the cause of the death but from what we have seen today it appears to be from a natural cause,” said John Loe of the emergency services.
Loe said the man had been on the shore of the harbour at the time of the discovery, about one kilometre from the mouth of Lake Huron on Georgian Bay.
The body is being taken to the local coroner’s office for further identification.
The Riverdale Park District said a tree fell on the park on the same day as the incident.
Police said there was no sign of human remains at the site and, based on current reports, there are no other leads to work with.
A man has been taken to hospital after being airlifted to a hospital in southwestern Ontario after falling about two kilometres from where he and a friend were caught in the tornado.
Police said the man was airlifted from the scene in Caledonia after being caught in the twister on Thursday. The two had gone out drinking with friends, who were also airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
“He wasn’t injured in the fall but he was exposed so that’s why he was transported to the hospital,” said Loe.
